Well, today was supposedly 3 degrees F cooler than yesterday but I lost 5 rabbits from the heat. This upsets me greatly because last summer was hotter with much higher humidity and I didn't lose any rabbits. 3 of my good breeding does, a 7 month old buck and a 2 month old doe. Her 3 siblings are fine, they were all in the same hutch. I hate losing critters.
Me too. I just put the meat birds outside yesterday to finish brooding in the chicken coop and it's HOT out there. They are all panting eventhough there's a bit of breeze from the open door and window.
I wonder if it would be silly to put a fan out there?
Sorry for your loss MM. I hope that will be the end of it.
Sue, whats left of my flock is all under the storage house. Cool and damp under there and they can come and go as they want. I put a fan on the rabbits with frozen pop bottles and hunks of ice. They're chewing the melting blocks and laying on the bottles. I hope it's enough to get them thru. A lady at the meet up said she has a friend that lives in Arizona who keeps rabbits and puts burlap on top of the cages and sprays it down a couple times a day. If I can find some burlap, I will do that too.
I was going to suggest the ice and fan, glad to see you already thought of it. I lost two hens my first year to heat and it was a hard lesson learned. It's been over 100 everyday here for the last week with over 100 temps forcasted for the next 5 days. God it's too early for this heat.
Yes, all of 2013 and part of 2012 are missing from the blog. You can thank Mike H for that. Almost all of those posts were about our great friendship and our partnership in farming. You all know how that turned out!
That's too bad. I worried about my three hens in the 105 heat. It's 81 at 1:30 am, so tomorrow (daytime) is going to be horrid, I mean torrid.
