Well, I had sort of an accident yesterday. Not really me all by myself, a rooster helped out. I had the hubby take apicture of it but it didn't show very well so I won't bother putting it up. So, here's what happened... Early afternoon and I'm out checking water and looking for eggs. The ducks are complaining so I get a bucket of feed and spread it for them. I turn around to walk back in the barn and get hit in the face by my rooster who is flying down out of the rafters. He hit me so hard, it knocked him a little loupy when he landed. His spur and claw raked right across the side of my face, knocked one of my front teeth loose and cut my lip. If that isn't a nice "how do ya do"? After all that, I found no eggs at all. A little good news tho, I got 3 this morning and the roo is doing fine.
Still nothing from the coalmine.......

ReplyDeleteI am going to start buying whole grains bulk and then making everything myself...since I can't grow it right now...what grinder would you recommend? There are so many!! I want to be able to grind up pastry flour as well...any suggestions off the top of your head? I think I would like a hand grinder. (?)
*sighs* I hate days like that.
ReplyDeleteI woke up to a racoon in the plant room curled up next to a heater.
it apparently came in through the porch door . Which was left open by a rather uncaring Cat. Some days are just hard to believe. I hope your scratch heals quickly. Those spur scratches can be horrid. Had one on my leg when i was little , I still have the scar.

ReplyDeleteWhen you go to buy wheat, buy hard white since it's the highest quality and highest gluten(makes good rising, fluffy breads and pastries) I have a Diamant grinder. It's pretty expensive now(almost double what I paid) and it has stone burrs. I can change them out for regular everyday flours to fine burrs for pastry. Even so, the wheat gets run thru and ground 3 to 5 times, sifting the bigger stuff out each time for regrinding until it's baby powder texture. It's a hand crank cast iron bolt down grinder. When you choose a grinder,m think about how often you'll be using it, how much you want to grind at one time and how long it will take with the grinder model you're looking at. Don't buy one with any kind of plastic on it.
Hey PrepperMom! I think I've got a raccoon killing my chickens, found feathers today and a couple hens are missing. Not the dog, she was in the house all morning... I cleaned the scratches well and they look pretty good today. I'd hate to have a line of scars down the side of my face...
ReplyDeleteI dont know what to do about it , I didnt even know it was in the plant room till the kids were at the window talking about a kIKI , so I went to go look , I ran it out with a broom. The plant room is a main part of our house (like a living room) . I normally let the kids go play there during the morning. I am sooo glad i didnt just let them out there this time. I think I'm gonna have to have my husband do him in , cant have a coon in the house with the kids. *sighs* he was completely unafraid , makes me worry a bit. He didnt have single bit of fear in him. I guess springs on its way , the males go a wandering .
ReplyDeleteTell me when you get yours. If you can rub your scratch with a bit o coconut oil if you can , it should help the skin a bit. SOrry i push the button too quickly at times.

Missing eggs, missing hens, hair-trigger rooster. Could be the raccoons have the rooster on high alert due to previous raids. Wear a big, floppy hat?
ReplyDeleteThey do seem very fearless. The DW encountered a raccoon on her way to the trashcan, and said it didn't even blink when she cracked a broom-handle over it's head!
Umm, EM- that bird'd be number one on the "soup parade" here- those hens will lay lotsa roosters before spring.. just let one have her eggs soon as he's done his business, to the crock pot with him!

Hello ChadinTx, thanks for stopping in! I was thinking the dog was egg sucking but since we found the feathers, we've cut the pup some slack. Father and son are on a coon hunt right now! Maybe I can have a new pair of slippers. They are brave little buggers but they have nothing on a possum. Possums are crazy nuts around here!
Hey Shy! Long time no see! Aw, I'm gonna give the old boy a pass, it wasn't like he was aiming for me, he's just dumb. I'm almost out of cook pot chickens now and spring is coming. He'll do his job and be a good boy, he knows what happens if he doesn't.
The knocked loose tooth is a little tighter tonite, hopefully it will be fine.
Crazy roo! Glad your ok. Those spurs can be pretty wicked at times. Hopefully the tooth will tighten back up. We never had a problem with raccoons when we had our chickens... It was always those nasty opossums!
ReplyDeleteOH my goodness!! I Hope your tooth is ok and i am sorry about the rest. My roo does that, he flies at my head. I found that carrying him around the hen house (upside down) while I collect eggs straightened him out. I know it doesnt sound nice but it beats teh pot.
ReplyDeleteMy great aunt had a banty rooster that terrified me when I was little. Bugger would fly for your face every time you went to the hen house! My great uncle gave me a squirt gun for my trips to look for eggs and that did the trick! The little rooster hated to get wet and as soon as he saw my trusty squirt gun he would dash for cover, lol!

Oh my goodness! You poor thing! Roosters are ornary things, aren't they? I hope your tooth firms up and doesn't give you any trouble. I read your comment that you think a raccoon is getting your hens. Silly raccoons. No respect for humans! Hope the day gets better!

First cookbook I've ever seen that read like a good novel. lol I actually read it cover to cover! My only question is; how does she stay so skinny? Some of those recipes! I think I gained 10 pounds just thinking about making them. Yum!
ouch.... i got rid of my two roos in thefall. i have 13 ladies out there and the past week has been good... 5 to 7 each day. but a month ago when it was 5 degrees, i was lucky to get 2 per day...! i just love fresh backyard chicken flock eggs!! :)

ReplyDeleteHello Patroit Steve! I've been eating roos all winter. Old Roo plus 3 more are all I've got now, have to keep a couple so I have chicks in the spring. I got 8 eggs today out of 22 hens. They're gonna quit laying again soon, it's supposed to get cold again :( I need a solar set-up for the chickens now! LOL
